Newly upgraded (10.9.1) having a hard time with track pad

So I have a Macbook Pro it was orriginaly leapord (got it right before Snow leapord came out)
Got upgraded to Snow Leapord and I haven't up dated since

A few weeks ago it wouldn't turn on and after some reasearch it looked like it was a corupt OS
I couldn't find my disks so I went ahead and made a Maverichs USB start up disk and upgraded it to get it on.
And it worked.

However my comp still seems a little more slugish than it should be.
And I'm having a hard time with the track pad.
I can open apps or work in a program but I can't click to open a file.
And my right click isn't working.
I've clicked and unclicked things in the system prefrances several times.

Some of the other gesters aren't working quite the way I thought they should but
I figure at least some of that is just differences in the OS.
But that I can't click to open file or right click to get to the open is very annoying.

(I can't right click in programs either.

So I'm wondering if there are new drivers That I need to download like when you up grade a pc.
or is my hardware just not where it needs to be or am I missing something?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)
