Retina MacBook Pro and HP2211x Monitor?

I have a late 2013 MacBook Pro with Retina Display. I want to plug it into my 21.5" HP 2211x monitor by the HDMI output. I am using an HDMI-DVI adapter to connect it. The adapter is a DVI-D adapter, and the cable is a DVI-D Single Link Adapter. When I plug this into my MacBook, the screen flickers, and the monitor either goes to sleep after a few seconds, or the monitor stays on, but with a black/blank screen. When the latter happens, the monitor shows up in Display settings, and I can change the arrangement, change resolution, etc. I can even move my mouse to the screen, and drag windows to the monitor.

I can plug this adapter and cable to my Windows Desktop PC, and it works fine.

Basically, the monitor is detected, but nothing is displaying. I online-chatted with Apple Support, and I was told to do an SMC Reset. I did this, and I still come to the same conclusion.

Has this happened to anyone else?
