If you switch from iTunes to credit card and then back again to you maintain the store credit or is it lost. I did that and can not receive pervious credit

Do you lose your store credit if payment method is changed to credit card and then switch back to store credit?

You won't lose your account's balance if you add a credit card to your account, but as long as you are buying content for yourself then your balance will be used up first before your card starts being charged.

From http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5582 :

When making purchases, content credits are used first, followed by Gift Certificate, iTunes Card, or Allowance Account credits; your credit card or PayPal account is then charged for any remaining balance.
