My MacBook Air 11'' has 60GB storage but 25% is taken up by 'other' how do I delete this

My macbook air 11inch has a 60gb storage capacity however, 16.57gb is being used by "other" what is this, how do i remove it?

I have noticed a similar thing happening with my iphone and usually a restore will delete the other. This is annoying as it is taking up over a quarter of my sapce and I do not have any room left!!!

MacBook Air, Mac OS X (10.7.5)

I have been reading other pages on this subject and would like to add some further information in order to avoid the similar replies on other threads that have been of no se to me.

The breakdown of my storage is as follows - Audio 28.9 / Photos 2.68 / Apps 9.97 / Backup zero / Other 15.6

I understand that other includes everything that is not audio, photos, movies and apps but I have next to niothing else stored on the machine. Even in the apps folder iphoto is the largest file, therefore I am not running any large app files that would require accompanying system files.

I have also looked at the log folder, where there are no large files whatsoever.

This is really annoying as Apple have marked up the costs of storage memory since the days of PCs and laptops and it appears that the "60gb you have to store media and files" is not 60gb at all.

For about $180 you can double the storage on you MBA with an SSD upgrade from OWC (macsales.com).

Replacing the SSD voids the warranty so if it is still under AppleCare I would not do it. Also you should keep the old SSD to put it back in if you ever wanted to take it into Apple for repairs. They will not service a MBA that has 3rd-party parts in it.
