Should I upgrade to OS X Maverick, Pros & Cons?

I have Imac desktop OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.8, is it better for me to get the new OS X Maverick? What are people saving about it? Any and all help would be appreciated. Thank you all. I have Microsoft Office 2008 installed on here? Would that be deleted?

No, MS 2008 wouldn't be deleted and yes it should still work.

However, the question is what do you think you will get out of upgrading?

I run Snow Leopard (and Lion, and Mountain Lion) and Mavericks and really there is nothing you can do in Mavericks that you can't do in SL, except run the latest version of Xcode and developer software to run on the latest machines.

If you're not developing software, I really can't see any advantage to upgrading to Mavericks. It has a few bells and whistles on it, as well as a few gotchas (like some 3rd party software will need to be updated or possibly even upgraded to run on Mavericks).

Basically, my rule is if your computer works fine and does everything you want it to do, forget about upgrading till you (have to) buy a new machine.

Yes. Absolutely with Phil Stokes. Snow Leopard is an excellent system and will happily chunter on till the cows come home. It may not have the fullest support any more but it has security updates and iTunes updates, so somebody up there loves it.

And how many apps do you have that are based on a Rosetta platform? They will all have to be replaced once these upgrades are in force.

Had v10.6.8(snow leopard) but found my desired VMware v4.x upgrade to Fusion 6 and upgrade to Photoshop Elements 12 needed at least Mac OS v10.7 ... so had to bite the bullet. Running on 2011 iMac w/ plenty of memory. Apple rep assured me my 2011 Office would work (rejected out of hand his recommendation to go to Mavericks for free ... incremental upgrades are a lot kinder from my experience). Upgraded VMware to v5.x then installed the purchased Mac OS v10.7 (Lion) ... was amazingly smooth ... as former, long-time MS Windows user, I was impressed. Still exploring new options but not too dramatic at this point.
