Will resetting my Mac make it faster?

If I wiped me Macbook back to its original factory settings, will it be faster? I feel like I have a lot of wasteful files and apps on my computer that I can't delete just be searching for them. If I backed up my important stuff and reset my Mac, would it come back faster? Thanks,
