I'm running FCP 6.0.6 on a 2010 Macbook Pro with 8gb ram, 500gb int hd and 1tb ext hd. OS is 10.6.8. I don't see the canvas or timeline when I start FCP and when I click on sequence I get "error-out of memory". I have deleted all projects and everything I could find from old work. I used a ram checking program and checked disk permissions all seemed ok. Any ideas?

Well, it shouldn't be RAM unless you have other apps loaded because FCP will only use 4GB max.
"Out of memory" can also mean you have insufficient free space on your disks. Start by emptying the trash and then evaluate your free space. The easy way is to select the drive in Finder and at the bottom of the window will be a statement of available space. If you do not have at least 20% remaining on your system drive, you're on the edge. I try to keep my system drive at 50% because OS X uses the drive for scratch and temp files.
At a minimum, your external (media) drive shoud have 2-3 times as much space as you think you need.
Running DiskWarrior can also be helpful in maintaining disk performance.
Lastly, an "Out of memory" error can be caused by a corrupt clip, I have very little experience with those, but fortunately the next guy probably will.

If the program was working fine, and now isn't, or just isn't working the way it should, the first things to do are:
1) Trash your FCP preferences. Download the Preference Manager from Digital Rebellion: http://www.digitalrebellion.com
2) Open the Disk Utility and Repair Permissions.
3) Shut down for 10 min. Go for a quick walk around the block and get SOME exercise today. Come back, turn on the computer and see how things are.
4) (optional) Do the Hokey Pokey and turn your self about. Results may vary.
I have about 300 of 500gb free on the laptop hd and the ext drive (set as scratch disk) has 1tb I haven't put anything on yet. I don't think I have any clips as I deleted everything I could find related to FCP projects.
I reset the preferences and did the permissions on the drives, no luck.
Digital Rebellion also has a product called Pro Maintenance Tools that has little goodies like Crash Analyzer, Corrupt FIle Repair, Error Message Look-up, Plug-in Manager, etc. that might be of interest. Take a look while you're getting the freebie...
If you didn't do the "hokey pokey," then all your efforts were useless...

Are you saying you get this error when there is no media loaded?
out of memory does not usually refer to running out of disk space. It's usually caused by images that are cmyk or using material with pixel aspect ratio's greater than 4000x4000. I've also occaisionally gotten out of memory errors when working with 2k material in fcp7.
Well, I completely reinstalled FCP with no good result. Also Itunes doesn't open so I guess it's an osx problem or a hardware problem so I'll move my investigation. That Pro Maintenance Tools is pretty awesome, I'll probably buy it. Thanks for the help guys.

did you "uninstall" it properly? The installation puts all sorts of files all over the place. Here's what you need to use to uninstall it.
Yes, that's exactly what I used. I'm not overly familiar with macs but I feel like the problem is coming from outside FCP.

Update, I booted in safe mode and saw that FCP thought I had "0 Vram" so I reset the PRAM on a reboot and everything seems to have come back ok.
check your settings of the sequence. Right click Settings click on Video Processing make sure Rende in 8-bit is on . Not 10 bit.
