Why won't my macbook recognize that it is connected to a midi keyboard?

The weird part is that I have had 2 different usb midi keyboards that it recognized and was able to use at one point, but both of them, at different points in time, the mac suddenly failed to even recognize as a midi connection so it is extremely difficult to trouble shoot. I know that it is not the keyboards that are the problem.
