I bought an iphone 5c and downloaded GarageBand. Then when I opened GarageBand so stood there that I had to buy the full version! Do you have to do it?

If you don't want to buy the full version and are happy using the limits of the trial version, then the answer is "no".
Did you previously buy an older version of GarageBand on a different iOS device? Then you can download the additional content for free.

GarageBand for iOS is a free download for all iOS 7 users. You'll get a starter set of three Touch Instruments (Keyboard, Drums, and Smart Guitar), which contains eight preset sounds and Audio Recorder. With a one-time in-app purchase, you can add Guitar Amp, Smart Keyboard, Smart Bass, Smart Strings, Smart Drums, Sampler, and a total of 157 preset sounds. The purchased instruments appear in the Touch Instrument browser after you purchase them.
If you previously purchased an earlier version of GarageBand for iOS, you will get the In-App Purchase content for free. To restore your purchase, you may need to tap Already Purchased when you see the in-app purchase in GarageBand.
