what does bad request:invalid hostname mean?

Help! Am having problems with my mac (imac 10.5.8). Difficulties in getting it started. This has been building up but now each website in turn shows white page headed Bad Request:Invalid Hostname. Emptying cache and resetting safari helps a bit.
