Macbook Pro 2007 Keyboard Problem/Questions

Hi, I just got a Macbook Pro Late 2007 because I have never had a Mac before and I would have liked to try it previously before buying a newer model. I know it is a little old but, hey I am still glad I got a Mac! 😀

I love it. I aboslutley am fond of everything, it is actually working so good. I am running Mavericks 10.9.1.

But, to get to my question, my keyboard will not light up. I know it has the capabiites because (1.), in the settings it gives me the options to adjust keyboard brightness in low light, and (2.), the keyboard has the options to change the brightness of the backlit behind the keyboard.

I have tried labtick to force the light on, and I tried going into a complete dark room and tried to change the light settings and still nothing. I have reset the PRAM, and also I did a SMC reset. So far, nothing has worked. Nevertheless, the keyboard works fine, including the caps lock light (green).

I am looking into replacing it, but I am not sure what I need for myself to do it. Is there just a seperate backlight I can buy for the keyboard or do I have to buy a new keyboard.

Also, how is it set up? Is it built in the keyboard or do I need a new backlight. Please help me.

Thank you.

tomster135,

iFixit is a good site for learning how to fix your own Mac. The steps to replace a keyboard for your model can be seen here. There isn’t enough detail on that page to determine whether the keyboard backlight can be installed separately from the keyboard. If you’re lucky, perhaps all you’d need is a replacement backlight cable, or even just to ensure that the cable is connected properly to its socket.
