Also see use of Image Capture in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4505 for a universal scan option.

I love my LiDE 80, but the last version of OS X it can be used with is 10.4.11 which I still run on an old iMac G5. Believe me, I tried everything from installing newer Canon drivers to running VueScan, but no dice.

You either need to replace the LiDE 80, or find an old Mac that will run Mac OS X 10.4.

I truly hope you solved the OP's issue, Ralph, and that it isn't just wishful thinking on their part, cos those kb articles sure didn't work for my LiDE 80, 10.9 and me!

(Sorry, honey, the old iMac stays! )

    NukeShim,

Could confirm that you're seeing the scanner, that is the LiDE-80 specifcally, under Image Capture in Mavericks, and that you can scan? Not showing up for me on a 2012 MBP running the latest 10.8.5 .

I'd actually really be surprised if it would, since the LiDe-80 specifically was internally different from the rest of the LiDE series. Canon didn't write the original drivers for them, some 3d-party did. The drivers were weak MacOS 9 updates (filename limited to 32 chars, no unicode support). They were never updated for the Intel Macs, unlike most of the LiDE line. I know this because I corresponded with Canon on this in 2008. The last driver is  a PowerPC one from 2005, which officially supports up to 10.4 only, although IIRC it did work for me on 10.5 for a while after doing some manual installing.

I got a CanoScan LiDe 80 to work with Mavericks with Sane: http://www.sane-project.org/.

Specifically, you need to use http://www.ellert.se/twain-sane/ as a starting point. Note that simply downloading the installs will NOT work. The version of Sane that has LiDe 80 support is 1.0.24, but can be found in the main Sane branch. What you need to do is download via git and build off the master branch. You will need to download the source for both sane backends and the twain bridge and rebuild them (the twain bridge relies on the sane backend). You need to build both in 386 mode since the twain bridge is written in carbon. It took me a day or two but I got it to work.
