VIP alerts not working on iPhone 5

I have in the notification center VIP alerts enabled. VIP Alerts are enabled for Lock Screen as well as pop up alert. Whenever I get mail from the VIP members I've selected I get no such alert on my iPhone 5. Does anyone know what could be the problem? I've tried disabling it and starting over from scratch and that didn't fix it. I even tried to restore my phone from a backup and that didn't fix it either.
