I am trying to migrate files...pictures and docs, some pdf from my WD My Book that had backed up a now dead PC to my new MAc. Any hints to make this an easier process?

If the WD contains a clone of the PC maybe migration over ethernet would work but I doubt it as this barely works right in the best circumstances. Manually dragging and dropping the files into the right location will probably be the most reliable way to get this done, all you have to do is wait for the stuff to copy over.

Make sure you put the files in the right place straight away, not your Macintosh HD root. Documents in Users > dacadoyle > Documents, Pictures in.... you get the idea. Will save you a lot of time sorting later on.
