Noise when The Smart Cover is closed.magnets are hit the ipad air's body

I bought an ipad air and a Smart Cover. On the same day, I noticed that the device had a sound when closing the Smart Cover. A sound like a *click*, I thought to be a magnet loose in the body of the ipad. I thought it was something normal about the device. After searching the internet and use my friend's iPad Air, I realize that was not normal. I went back in iPlace (authorized warranty) and they recommended me to go at Fnac exchange the device, because I'm still under warranty shop. All ok so far. I came home with a new unit and no noise. After a few days of use I noticed a dead pixel. Sad but okay. After research I saw that many users are having the same problem. So would not return to fnac so. (Not that I like dead pixels, but I read about costumers how had Dead pixels too and after exchanges ended with 2 dead pixels).

The problem is, the noise returned This night. When closing the Smart Cover, I hear a click magnet beating within the body of the ipad. It is strong enough to feel with my fingers. Important detail: When I open or closing the Smart Cover, it does not stick to the ipad until the * click * is heard.

The question I ask: is this happening to other people? Is that a problem? Or is normal in ipad air? I searched on the web and it is not normal! But I wanted a more technical view. Does anyone know about this?

I have the same problem too.

After I bought my first iPad Air about one month, I noticed that my iPad had an odd sound every time when opening or closing the smart cover.

A week ago, they gave me a new iPad Air again, but the noise is back again now.

So I guess maybe the problem is on the Smartcover, and it's need time for the Smartcover to "damage" the iPad, so that the iPad can show the sound of damaging. 😟

The iPad mini have the same problem too: iPad mini

they give me a new iPad Air on the store again, but after a few months, without any kind of sound, the click is back. Started only when I open the ipad. now is when i open or close. the click is everytime there!

Again, this is not the sound of iOS7 (when you close the smartcover, or turn off the screen). This is a fisical sound. Again, I talked with the support and they said to me that is not right. SO, I am calling now to Apple. 😟

My ipad also makes this noise.

it is defiantly not a sound file generated by the iPad, similar to the one when turning on or off the device. More of a physical noise created by static. Like others on this thread I have also felt it and the noise has not always been there, moreover it has only started recently.

i Have a magnetic screen protector also.

ill speak directly to Apple, but wanted to voice my experience on here to confirm it is not just a one off occurrence.

Good luck.

My iPad used to do same sound when I opened my smartcover and attached it to the back right. But now there is no sound, and also, now, the smart cover is not attaching properly to the back of the iPad anymore. It doesn't stays in place, it satys hanging while I use the iPad, something that is really annoying.

This is not normal, is it?

About the sound my iPad does it since the beginning and it was never a problem until now that the smart cover is not working properly.

Thanks.

I had this problem with my iPad Air, only bought recently. Took it in to my local Apple Store and after they looked a little baffled, they agreed to just replace it.

Yet, two weeks after getting my replacement, the problem returned. Once again, I popped into the Apple Store and they agreed to once again replace it. However, they also managed to create a new fault (making the magnets repel the case) after fiddling with mine and using their own smart covers to try on the device. It was all very awkward, but the general gist is that they replace units with the fault.

To me, it sounds like a magnet has come loose and being pulled by the smart cover from side to side. For such an expensive piece of equipment, I would see about it in the store as soon as possible if you have a similar problem.

I purchased my iPad air w/ smart cover early 2014 and after about 2-3 months of use I started noticing the same clicking noise. Definitely a hardware issue, not software. It always happens when it gets opened and cover flipped to the back side. The problem is getting worse too. I'll be 2 minutes into reading an article and hear the "CLICK" all of a sudden. It sounds to me like whatever was used to mount the magnet inside to hole it in place is failing. Now it takes a second and then clicks when the magnet get attracted to the cover. I'm afraid to try and get it replaced because it sounds like it will just reoccur, and then on an iPad that doesn't have my engraving (when they replace Apple products the engraving is never included). I don't want to waste time and money shipping my Factory bought iPad to receive a Refurbished one, only to end up with the same problem. Shouldn't they have "wear and tear" tested this better in their R&D lab first? The Smart Cover isn't a 3rd party product! I spent $949 on a 128GB iPad Air w/ THEIR engineered Smart Cover. I sure hope they iron out these wrinkles.

I Have read through all the comments to date. It is NOT a system sound - turning off lock screen sound does not remove this noise. It is a metallic click and is related to the "Smart Cover" magnets closing on the metallic case. I suspect something is loose inside the iPad. My wife's iPad - identical to mine and bought at the same time from the same Apple Store doesn't make a sound.

i Also have random sleep mode events and I am wondering if the two issues are connected?

Same problem here. There was no internal mechanical magnet noise for a few months, then it apparently broke loose from inside the case. As has already been stated, it's not a system noise. This happens when the power is fully shut off. To reproduce the problem, purchase the smart cover, and use it regularly for a few months. When you open the smart cover, allow it to fold back and attach to the back of the iPad. Initially you won't hear the magnetic clicking noise. Eventually you will likely hear it. Presumably Apple will acknowledge this problem, and replace the defective units. Or, at least design a solution into future iPads.
