My apple remote "down" arrow is not working .... help!

The "down" arrow on my apple remote has suddenly stopped working. Only the up, right and left work so I cannot navigate through my selections for anything and cannot use the remote. Battery is fine and nothing has spilled on it. If I cannot get it to work will a new remote be my only option?
