My phone suddenly stopped having a dial tone unless on speaker. Also when I make a call, friends can hear me, but I cannot hear them unless on speaker- any advice.

Cell phones don't have a "dial tone". They never have. Do you mean the earpiece stopped working?

I mean when I make a call, it goes thru, but I cannot hear anything (the person I am calling) unless the phone is on speaker or I have earbuds in. The other person can hear me but i can't hear them.

Just want to say it was the mute switch clean it all up with a can of air and hydrogen peroxide and it works great. Turn the phone off while doing it then wait
a awhile let it dry out. and Bingo watch out apple tech.
