Philips 15PF5120 + Mac Mini

I have a Philips 15PF5120 LCD monitor that I'd like to use with my Mac Mini. The Mac Mini appears to me to have a DVI-I Dual Link output. The Philips monitor appears to have a DVI-I Dual Link Input. So, I plug the two together with a DVI-I Dual Link cable and I get nothing -- a black screen. The monitor has both a DVI and PC Input mode. Both mode's result in a black screen.

The monitor's manual has the following regarding resolution set-up:

1 - 640x480 VGA VESA 60 V Freq=59.940 H Freq=31.469
2 - 800x600 SVGA VESA 56 V Freq=56.250 H Freq=35.156
3 - 800x600 SVGA VESA 60 V Freq=60.317 H Freq=37.897
4 - 1024x768 XGA VESA 60 V Freq=60.004 H Freq=48.363

It appears that when I'm in the TV's PC Mode, I have access to change the V & H Freq. So, here's how tested each of these settings:
- I connect my mac mini to a monitor that works
- I change the mac mini's resolution to one above
- I unplug the DVI cable from the old monitor
- I plug the DVI cable into the Philips TV
- I get a black screen on both the DVI and PC Mode inputs
- I use the TV's PC Mode settings to adjust the V& H Freq
- I still geta black screen.

Does anyone have any suggestions?
Has anyone had any success/experience with this monitor?

Mac Mini's do not have dual link DVI output - that is one of the reasons they will not support the 30 inch cinema display from Apple.

I had the same issues with trying to use a Sony 32 inch LCDTV as my monitor - the Sony does not recognize the graphics card from either the Mac Mini or the MacBook (Intel GMA950 graphics)using the PC input mode on the tv. So, even though the tv manual advised against it, I used a DVI to HDMI adapter and set the Mini's resolution to 1024 X 720 and that works. If you set the resolution to anything other than 480, 720 or 1080, you get the blank screen again.

I hope this helps - it took me two hours at the Apple store where I bought my Mini to get this figured out.

yes - I finally used the DVI to HDMI cable - the TV only recognizes high definition resolutions - 480, 720, 1080 - but it does work for my needs. It does not give pixel to pixel resolution, though.

I never did get it to work with this display using the PC input. I think the graphics card in the Mini is the culprit - I was able to get a Macbook Pro to work just fine, as well as my iBook G4. They both have different graphics cards.

I just ordered a VGA amplifier - am reading that the voltage levels are too low - should have it in a few days and hope it fixes the issue for $50. As a test i plugged a DVI to Vga adapter into the TV and the other end of the vga cable into a compaq laptop and that worked great. So i know VGA can work i am hoping its just the levels are too weak. Will let you know.

Hi, I have an intel Mac Mini 1.66GHz core duo and a Sharp 26" LC TV HD dvi to hdmi and had display trouble at initial setup. What I had discovered was when the mini had been using a vga display originally and then switch to this display, at boot the system created display over-rides in System>Library>Displays>Overrides

Here is what to do:
You need to connect the mini to a VGA display temporarily to do these modifications.
Go to System>Library>Displays>Overrides

Find out which over-ride has been created most recently by the modification date, and delete that one by moving to the trash and then shutdown the mini.

Resetting the PMU

Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord.
Wait 10 seconds.
Plug in the power cord while simultaneously pressing and holding the power button on the back of the computer.
Let go of the power button.
Press the power button once more to start up your Mac mini.
Important: This procedure also resets the computer's PRAM. Be sure to reset your computer's time, date, and other system parameter settings as
necessary.

Once the Mini reboots re-connect the dvi-hdmi to the mini making sure the display is off but the hdmi end is in the tv's hdmi port. Turn on the display and you should now have the display working at 800x600, which is default for non Apple LCDs. Re-connect the keyboard and mouse and open Display Pref.

Your display and the Mac Mini will both handle 800x600,1280x720 and 1920x1080 all 60Hz and the display prefs will allow others but be sure never to use them, as the Mini will support them but the display will not.
When detecting display button is pressed mine is detected as Orion LCD TV/Display and even System Profiler confirms this. Not sure which if any yours will detect.

One other note, because you are using a 26" and the max size display any single port dvi Mac will handle is a 23" you will have a 1.5" black border around our Macs desktop. On some LC TV's the display is scaled and you cannot see the menu bar. To fix this go to Display prefs >Options and click Over-scan to turn on and then once again to turn back off and it will not be scaled, you should now have the entire display and a beautiful picture.

By the way, the DVI to S-Video solution is horrible on LCD TVs. The fonts are distorted and the images are faded.

Good Luck!

It Works!!!!!

I bought the Startech St122 VGA splitter from Amazon - connected the DVI/VGA adaptor to the mini and a vga cable into the adapter and the other end to the video in port on the splitter. Then i connected the video out 2 port using a vga cable and another vga adapter to the DVI input on the TV. Selected PC input on the TV turned on the splitter and mini and after a few minutes the VGA image appeared! I set the mini resolution to 1024*768 @ 60Hz and thats it - all set!
