what is difference between appleid icloud or apple id email
iPhone 4, iOS 7.0.4, default is never what I think it is
The gmail id is used for everything. I don't even use icloud; it's just a confusing topic and i'd like to understand it. And, when I tried to change my icloud id to the gmail one, it wasn't permitted. ugh.
So i'm sill confused. What is the purpose of having an @icloud.com id? When the ipod first came out, my apple id created was/is my gmail email address. Then icloud comes out, and the genius bar people made me setup an icloud id, but now that I think about it, it could be because I was there having my phone replaced and they needed to back it up???? Either way, I've never understood why they didn't allow me to use my gmail email apple id as the icloud id. Can you or someone explain?
iCloud is an online service provided by Apple. the @icloud.com email is one of the facilities provided within that. You log into both by using an Apple ID; some people have a different Apple ID for iCloud from that for iTunes or these forums, some have the same; it works perfectly well either way.
You can perfectly well use your Gmail ID to create an iCloud account. Go to System Preferences>iCloud and if you are signed in there with the @icloud.com, sign out. Then sign in with the Gmail ID. You will be asked to create a new @icloud.com address when you enable Mail (you won't be able to use the @icloud.com address you already have as part of a different ID because they cannot be transferred between IDs).
If, as I suggested, you may have 2 Apple IDs, one using the @icloud address and one using the @gmail address, that would explain why you can't start using the gmail address for your Apple ID.
It may already an Apple ID.
I suggest you visit applied.apple.com and attempt to sign in to both email addresses/Apple IDs.
Or use iforgot.apple.com with both to see if Apple has both in their system as Apple IDs.

You likely have 2 Apple IDs. The Gmail one you have previously used and the iCloud one.
