Wifi on MacBook Pro suddenly stopped working

I have been using WiFi on my MacBook Pro for some time without any problems. Last week, I was connected on the WiFi and in the middle of a skype call - and it suddenly stopped working. After reboot - I was able to restart that evening. However, it has not worked since. Connections which were trouble free earlier have become completely out of reach. I am traveling - so the connections in the hotel etc. require code, but now the login screen never shows up.

I can see the network and when I try to connect, it comes up an exclamation mark through the WiFi icon after trying to connect. I am not a power user but had a colleague who has a lot of experience with MacBook Pro try but did not get anywhere. I have tried assist me, diagnostics, etc. (which seems to write a file but I do not have any use for it) but getting nowhere.

I need advice on where to turn. I am currently hardwired and can connect that way. Also, I can boot on Windows and connect there. I am running OS X 10.9.1. Will try and see if there is an update available.

Thank you very much!

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), OS X Mavericks (10.9.1)

When you see an exclamation point in the Wi-Fi menu, from the menu bar, select

System Preferences... Network

Click the Assist me button and select Assistant. Follow the prompts. You may get a warning that Wi-Fi is not available, that you're too far from the base station, or that you're using the wrong password.

Assuming that you've ruled out those possibilities, restart the computer and try again. If there's no change, click the lock icon in the lower left corner of the preference pane and authenticate, if necessary. From the Location menu at the top of the window, select Edit Locations. A sheet will drop down. Click the plus-sign button to create a new location. Give it any name you want. In the new location, set up the Wi-Fi service with the same settings you used before. Click Applyand test.

If there's still no connection, and if you have control of the router, compare its settings to Apple's recommendations. Some third-party routers may be incompatible in 802.11b/g/n radio mode. Try setting the mode to 802.11n only.

Unfortunately, no progress so far. But, do appreciate your responses!

I am not using my own router - Airpot or otherwise. I am using the wifi available at Hilton hotels (and seen it happen in two different Hiltons since Thursday) and at a client site.

The issue is not with a specific router type - as I have connected with the wifi networks I am trying to connect to in the past week. Also, I am hoping that the wifi card has not gone bad - as I am able to connect to wifi when I boot my machine in Windows 8.1 which I have installed in bootcamp.
