black screen on macbook air

Suddenly my screen of my mac book air just went black and the only way I could get it back was to hold the power button down to turn it off and then turn it back on. Why is this happening?

Choose the method for:

"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".

Power button

Sleep function

Try the SMC reset but did you by any chance try to wake it from sleep just after it went dark? If so, see these threads:
