my sleep/wake isn't turning my iPod on. Is there any other way to turn on the iPod?

My sleep/wake button isn't turning my iPod on. When my screen dims, is there any way I can reactivate the screen? Keep in mind when the iPod plays it dims and I can't see whats playing next or if I want to search for another song. The iPod is only about 3 years old. Almost new. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
