I have an iPad mini that somehow got locked. The wrong passcode was entered several times and it became disabled. No one has helped so far hoping for someone to see this and help

Seems simple right? Hook up to a computer and restore and bypass disable screen? NOPE. Everytime I tried to connect it to iTunes it gives me a lovely message that says something to the effect of " cannot sync to itunes because passcode needs to be entered on iPad" but the iPad mini says it is disabled so I am getting the total run around from this devil spawned tech.

I tried to also restore it in recovery mode like someone suggested but it still said the same thing. The person said if I followed instructions it would not do that. Well, it did. Here is exactly what I did:

Itunes has detected an iPad in recovery mode. You must restore this iPad before it can be used with iTunes". and the iPad mini has the itunes logo with the USB cord and an arrow on it on the screen. I clciked ok on the computer to shut that message off.

On iTunes it says "Ipad recovery mode. Your software is up to date. Click check for updatr to see if new software is available." The check fo update button is grayed out and the Restore iPad button is available to click. I click on "restore iPad" and a pop up says "Are you sure you want to restore the ipad to its factory settings? All of your media and other data will be erased, and the newest version of the ipad software installed. Itunes will verify the restore with Apple. After this prcess is complete, you will have the option to restore your contact, calendars, text messages, and other settings."

I clicked on "restore and update" and it shows a box with software update 7.0.4 and I click on next. I accept the user agreement and it starts to download the ipad software update.

I wait for the update to install and as I am waiting a box pops up that says "itunes could not connect to the ipad because it is locked with a passcde. You must enter your passcode on the ipad before it can be used with itunes" and it gives me the option to click more information, try again, and cancel.

So what do I do now?

Forgotten Restrictions Passcode Help

iPad,iPod,iPod Touch Recovery Mode

You will need to restore your device as New to remove a Restrictions passcode. Go through the normal process to restore your device, but when you see the options to restore as New or from a backup, be sure to choose New.

You can restore from a backup if you have one from BEFORE you set the restrictions passcode.

Also, see iTunes- Restoring iOS software.

If you cannot manage any of the above then:

Placing your device into recovery (DFU-Device Firmware Upgrade) mode:

Follow these steps to place your iOS device into recovery mode. If your iOS device is already in recovery mode, you can proceed immediately to step 6.

1. Disconnect the USB cable from the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, but leave the

other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.

2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds

until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.

* If you cannot turn off the device using the slider, press and hold the

Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. When the device turns off,

release the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons.

3. While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the

device. The device should turn on. Note: If you see the battery charge warning,

let the device charge for at least ten minutes to ensure that the battery has some

charge, and then start with step 2 again.

4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen.

When this screen appears you can release the Home button:

5. If necessary, open iTunes. You should see the following "recovery mode" alert:

6. Use iTunes to restore the device.

If you don't see the "Connect to iTunes" screen, try these steps again. If you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen but the device does not appear in iTunes, see this article and its related links.

Additional Information:

If you have a problem getting into recovery mode then try: RecBoot: Easy Way to Put iPhone into Recovery Mode.

Note: When using recovery mode, you can only restore the device. All user content on the device will be erased, but if you had previously synced with iTunes on this computer, you can restore from a previous backup. See this article for more information.

This topic is a bit old, but recently I found myself in the same situation as the original poster and couldn't find helpful answers online. I was eventually able to resolve the issue and restore the ipad.

I put the ipad in recovery mode following the official instructions and started the recovery process, but after itunes started downloading the software for a few minutes, it popped up a message saying:

"itunes could not connect to the ipad because it is locked with a passcode. You must enter your passcode on the ipad before it can be used with itunes"

I thought this message was strange since the reason I was performing the restore was because we didn't know the passcode, so why was it asking for it? It seemed to be a bit of a catch-22. The popup had three options: More Information, Try Again, and Cancel. First I clicked Try Again, which brought me back to the same popup again. Then I clicked on More Information and it took me to an Apple support page with the same recovery instructions. At this point I'm thinking that I'm stuck.

However, when I clicked back on itunes I saw that it was still downloading the software, and that it would take about 30 minutes more. So, with few other options available, I waited.

As the download continued, I noticed that the ipad went out of recovery mode, apparently it had timed out. So I put the ipad back into recovery mode (disconnect usb, hold the home button, re-connect usb) and just let the download continue. Once the download completed, I was able to proceed with the restore process and get the ipad back to the original factory state with no further issues.

n.b.

- I used itunes installed on Windows 7 to perform the restore

- the ipad had never been backed up or synched with the installation of itunes I used to perform the restore

Hopefully my frustrating experience will help someone else in the future. 🙂

I had this same problem. There is no information out there (lot of questions about it though) and everything pointing back to the solution of put it in recovery mode, not what to do when recovery mode tells you it can't do what you're deleting you ipad to accomplish...

This solution, to unplug and restart the recovery process while the update is downloading is what finally worked for me. Thanks!!!

although this thread is old, i just got to this situation.

Thanks for your reply, 'cause when i got to the "itunes could not connect to the ipad because it is locked with a passcode. You must enter your passcode on the ipad before it can be used with iTunes" message i was puzzled but after reading your post about letting the download finish and then

retry the recovery mode and restore process i gave it a try and it worked.

thanks

I just want to say THANK YOU for figuring this out! I just got a new iPad Air 2 and with Apple putting in a new 6 digit passcode and me using the touch ID all the time I forgot my new passcode and of course the WiFi went out as soon as I couldn't get back on it so resotring it from Find My iPhone wasn't an option. I was ready to pull my hair out when NOTHING else worked! So THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! This is the only place I have read the solution so Apple should take note and add this to their solutions page.
