Why does my iPad 4th gen take so long to charge?

I was charging my iPad this morning and it was at 31% and an hour and a half later, it only went up 10% making it a total of 41% charged. In an our and a half it only went up 10%. Why is did that take so long?

iPad, iOS 7.0.4

Firstly it has a very big battery and hence will take considerably longer than something like a phone or iPod.

However, you might check that you are using the correct charger and not one that came with your phone or iPad.
