ipod showing up in itunes but not as a device on my computer

I just had a new hard-drive installed on my macbook pro (2009) after my original one died and am trying to transfer the music from my ipod classic to my new itunes library. My ipod is being recognized in itunes, but not as a device on my computer. I need my ipod to be labeled as a device on my computer so I can use third party software (ex: expod, iSkysoft TunesOver, iExplorer) to extract the data. As of now none of the listed examples are detecting my ipod when I plug it in. What do I do?

iPod classic, iOS 7.0.4

I figured it out! I had to go into iTunes and click on my iPod, then under the options section I enabled disk use. Now I am in the process of transferring my music!
