All else has failed and you're feeling screwed, watch this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=chZSdY5HkV0

TLDR: Treat the phone just like a PC:

  1. Open iPhone
  2. Disconnect everything
  3. Unscrew square-ish metal piece at the top right to get at the connections to the screen, back camera and volume buttons
  4. Unscrew the long rectangle-ish metal piece next to the bottom right corner of the battery to get to the battery connection and lightning connector
  5. Connect the battery and screen and see if it works
  6. Connect the lightning connector to plug into iTunes
  7. Plug in other connectors one at a time to see if they are causing the issue.

Hello, rezafromnew york.

Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.

I see you have processed some troubleshooting steps already and the issue persists. There are just a couple more that I could recommend. I would also try restoring the device on another known good network.

Error 9

This error occurs when the device unexpectedly loses its USB connection with iTunes. This can occur if you manually disconnect the device during the restore process. You can resolve this issue by using USB troubleshooting, using a different Dock Connector or Lightning Connector to USB cable, trying another USB port, restoring on another computer, or by eliminating conflicts from third-party security software.

See: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3694#9

This error can be caused by several things:

  • Your antivirus is blocking access to Apple's servers
  • Your Firewall is blocking the same access
  • You have temporary corruption in your network settings
  • Your phone was jailbroken
  • Your computer was used to hack or jailbreak some iOS device in the past, and its network database was corrupted.

For the first two try disabling these features before updating.

For the third try rebooting your computer just before restoring

For the last two you are on your own; you can't get help in an Apple forum for hacked phones. Although for the last you can try restoring your computer's hosts file to its default (google is your friend).

Try this if you get a chance, it worked for me before, might work you, its in reference to the comment above me regarding hosts file that sometimes has to do with restoring errors.

On MAC OS, from the desktop, to find the hosts file, open Finder and, in Finder's menu bar, Select Go > Go to Folder. In the box, type the following location and press Return.

/private/etc/hosts

double click to edit, you will have to replace the newly edited file with the old one.

delete anything with the gs.apple.com.

then simply restart Mac and try restoring again.
