Q: Why am I asked for credit info for a free app

Is it a new account, and if so how did you create it ? Unless an account is created by following the instructions on this page : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2534

then credit card details will need to be entered before the account can be used to download any item from the store - you should be able to remove the card's details after entering them.
