2010 macBook pro 15". Lagging and froze during last update.

Hi guys, 2 months ago I had my hinge replaced under warrenty because of a faulty glue joint. When I got the computer back I noticed a slight grinding in the body while runnung (hard drive?). It got better so I let it go, this morning I performed a software update and it froze during the validation process so I had to power off by holding the power button. I found a past tip that led me to find the folder with the update and I put the content of the folder in the trash. I did an update again and it said I was up to date.

I want to cure my lagging and freezing, need some help! as you can tell by my user name I am better with wood, not computers so please keep your recommendations in "newbie" terms. Thanks for your help!

Could be completely off topic RobRz, but when I am using the computer and it freezes for 10-20 seconds or I get the spinning wheel is there any way for me to pinpoint what is causing it? I am wondering if it is my cable provider? I performed a speed test (upload and download) and they said it was fine.

If I wanted to erase EVERYTHING FROM MY COMPUTER and bring it back to the factory settings, would I be able to get it running like new (fast and efficient)? Would this be difficult to do? The only thing important to me on the computer is my iPhoto. I have done backups for the computer so this is all on a external hard drive.

System / Library / Extensions should be full of things. You're looking in the root of the hard drive, right?

What you can do is open Activity Monitor and sort it by CPU in descending order. Look at it when the spinning beachball starts.

If you want to install from scratch you need the disks that came with the computer. Boot from Disk 1, partition the drive, then install. You should copy everything you have to an external drive first.
