Q: 2010 macBook pro 15". Lagging and froze during last update.

Hi guys, 2 months ago I had my hinge replaced under warrenty because of a faulty glue joint. When I got the computer back I noticed a slight grinding in the body while runnung (hard drive?). It got better so I let it go, this morning I performed a software update and it froze during the validation process so I had to power off by holding the power button. I found a past tip that led me to find the folder with the update and I put the content of the folder in the trash. I did an update again and it said I was up to date.

I want to cure my lagging and freezing, need some help! as you can tell by my user name I am better with wood, not computers so please keep your recommendations in "newbie" terms. Thanks for your help!

I'm hoping it doesn't freeze anymore. If it's truly frozen and you can't even change windows, then this won't work. I think at that point I'd go for the reinstall.

What this will let you do is check in the event it slows down drastically rather than freezes.

Strange but I cannot find that last 3rd party launch daemon in the system library? I guess I won't worry about it too much. A HUGE thank you again RonRz for all the help today, I will monitor the situation and see if the freezing still occurs. If you don't mind I will keep you in my history so that if I have another question for you in the future you can help me out.

If all else fails I will resort to a reinstall.

    Regards

Sure, you can call me again with another question if you have one. If you decide to do the reinstall, here's the procedure.

Hi BobRz, We worked on a problem on my computer 2 weeks ago (as you can see in the discussion), I have another problem that is related to our problem 2 weeks ago.

Last night I got a pop-up for a mac update, I installed it ( 1 item) and the computer completely froze whrn it was configuring the file (exactly like it did 2 weeks ago). I turned off the computer by holding the power button, when I turned it on it intermittantly freezes. I have 2 computers, as I am typing I logged on to my other computer and it literally took 3 minutes for the log in to process. Should I re-install the disk?

Hi Carpenter. I thought we had this thing fixed. At this point a reinstall might be the best bet. Do you have a full backup?

The best way to do a full backup is with Carbon Copy Cloner. It's not free, but it backs up the Recovery partition which you may find useful in the future. Super Duper is free, but doesn't back it up. In this particular case it shouldn't matter as long as you don't repartition the disk.

BobRz, question, I downloaded SuperDuper, for copy I choose Mac HD (obviously) to (thats the question). I have my slim drive still plugged in, if I choose slim drive it says that it will first ERASE the slim drive (including the time machine backups. It says to preserve time machine backups choose smart update, but I do not see where the smart update option is.

My main concern is that I downloaded my entire iPhoto library on my slim drive and I want to make sure i don't lose this. Help!!

This may wipe your drive. You don't have another one? You really should for backups anyway.

Are you saying I should have 2 G-Drive slims?

Can I segment my G-Drive slim so that I can keep the photos only and delete the rest?

I'm saying you should have multiple copies of your data. If the hard drive in your machine completely crashes right now, do you have a way to replace the data? Hard drives are mechanical, they're ALWAYS going to fail, it's just a matter of when. I personally have a Time Machine backup that updates constantly as well as a clone I run about once a week. If I understand your current setup, you've got some stuff on an external drive that you value as well. What happens if that fails?
