Q: 2010 macBook pro 15". Lagging and froze during last update.

Hi guys, 2 months ago I had my hinge replaced under warrenty because of a faulty glue joint. When I got the computer back I noticed a slight grinding in the body while runnung (hard drive?). It got better so I let it go, this morning I performed a software update and it froze during the validation process so I had to power off by holding the power button. I found a past tip that led me to find the folder with the update and I put the content of the folder in the trash. I did an update again and it said I was up to date.

I want to cure my lagging and freezing, need some help! as you can tell by my user name I am better with wood, not computers so please keep your recommendations in "newbie" terms. Thanks for your help!

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

You can partition the external drive so that the photos and whatever sit on one partition and your copy sits on another with Disk Utility. But again... you really need to consider what happens when a drive fails. Take a look on these forums. It happens all the time.

OK, I would like to partition my slim drive, can you talk me through this? I really do not have anything super important on my computer, I work with wood not computers so the rest doesn"t bother me. My photos are what my wife would KILL ME over.

I can talk you through this, but I've gotta tell you I'm reluctant to do it. If there's a problem you lose the photos and I'm responsible for your death and probably the next one on her hit list. Or you can run out to Best Buy and spend $80 for another drive and we can both live to be old men. I vote for the drive.

LOL, I think you are right, I will go get ANOTHER external hard drive! Question, when I erase the hard drive wold it be better for me to go Mountain Lion instead of Snow Leopard or is there not much of a difference?

You can go all the way to Mavericks if you want to. I'm running it on a mid-2010 right now. What are you running currently?

Both computers are running snow leopard OS X 10.6.8. One of the geniuses at the store told me that my computer is not fast or strong enough to run Mavericks...true or false??

If I want to perform all these tasks are you patient enough to talk me through it all??

I'm typing this on the same computer you're talking about, so I'd have to say the Genius needs a refresher course. The only difference is I've got an SSD, which makes the machine faster than the current version of classic MBP that they sell. I'm not sure how much RAM you have, but that's a fairly cheap upgrade. That said, there's nothing wrong with Snow Leopard and a lot of people prefer it over Mavericks. What I would do in your place is to clone your hard drive to an external with a new external hard drive and Carbon Copy Cloner. CCC isn't free, but it copies the Recovery partition, which you'll want in the future if you do decide to go past Snow Leopard. That way if you upgrade to Mavericks and hate it, it's very easy to go back to the Snow Leopard configuration.

An SSD is a solid state drive, for background info. It has no moving parts, so it's waaaaay faster than a regular hard drive. The upgrade process is pretty simple, if that's something you want to consider. If you want to go that way, we're going to do something different on the external drive. Take a look at these and see if it's something that interests you.

And yes, I can take you through the steps. The only thing is time lag, like if you're ready to do it and I'm not here.

I will trust you completely with your computer expertise. Can you please explain what the best option for me for my iPhoto library? What should I save it on, where should it go? I just did another entrecheck, here are the results.

You actually have a 2009 rather than a 2010, which is sorta good news. The 2010's were prone to a graphics card problem. What I'd do is to upgrade to 8GB of RAM and consider an SSD. That would make it feel like a new machine.

As for your photos... at this moment I'd just leave them on the drive as you have them. Decide whether you want an SSD or not. If you don't, you get a second hard drive. By the time we're done, you'll have 2 external hard drives with 2 partitions on each. One will be for your photos and whatever, the other will be for backups. I know it seems excessive, but honestly, look at all the posts on here from people who are desperate because their hard drives have crashed, the external has failed, etc. If you have backups it's just an inconvenience. If you don't it's a disaster.

The reason for deciding on the SSD... if you go that route, your current hard drive will end up becoming an external. You just replace it with an SSD and pop it into an enclosure like this:

What are the benefits of a SSD? You say it is for "background information", what does that mean?

I meant I was giving you background information on what it does. The big benefit to an SSD is speed. In a hard drive, the disk is constantly spinning and the read write head is moving back and forth over the disk to find the info it needs. In an SSD there are no mechanical parts. It's more like an extension of computer memory. As an example, it probably takes your Mac 2-3 minutes to boot. It takes mine maybe 25 seconds. Watch this for an idea.

BobRz, completely off topic, but this freezing that I am getting with my computer is it really a hardware problem? When I had my hinge replacement they also needed to replace my airport card, is there any way that it is the airport card that is causing me my problems?

OK, let me digest all you are trying to help me on here....

    1. I could simply get another external hard drive (~$100) end of story.

    2. I can get a SSD (how many GB?) for ~$130, and another external hard drive for $100.

    3. Upgrade my RAM to 8 GB, what does that go for $$ ??

These upgrades, what can I do and what do I have to get done for me? Is it the RAM upgrade that someone has to do for me?

Thanks for explaining this to me, it is for sure cheaper that buying a NEW Macbook pro. I know you do not have a crystal ball, but how many more years can I get off this Mac?

Explain this to me if you can...... now everything seems to be fine in my universe and my computer is not freezing anymore. Why in the world did it completely go bonkers twice now when I tried to do an upgrade. Both times my computer was not able to complete the upgrade and I had to force quit the computer by holding down the power button.

    Any suggestions?
