New to the Mac family of computers. I am utilizing an IOGear USB Common Access Card Reader. When utilizing the device it does not display an icon on the desktop nor does it display in Finder under Devices. I want to safely remove the device as I must routinely close my system and change locations. The device works great with MAC IOS as well as with Parallels software running Windows.

Thanks, but this did not display my device. A remote drive is displayed under devices, but that is not my cac reader. Any other thoughts? On a PC all USB device drives are displayed in the lower right tray, anything similar on mac?
Open Finder (left side of dock). Go to Finder > Preferences in the menu. Under the "General" tab, check the top four boxes.
Does that display the device on your desktop?
Once it's displayed there, you can control-click it and eject it from there.
