my GarageBand is mute?

So I decided I want to tinker with GarageBand, but it seems no matter what I do, play my own track with a korg nanokey or play a downloaded NIN garageband project - I can't get any sound to actually play back. Other applications on this MBA play sound just fine and I did try going though all the Output options under Preferences / Audio/MIDI, to no avail. Ideas?

FINALLY! I just created a new account on this machine and under it, GarageBand behaves as expected, sound playback works and so do the "New Track" buttons/options. Going back to my regular account, the problem persisted. So I searched for and wiped out everything GarageBand-related under ~/Library as the "broken" user and voila, everything works now.

Have you checked the Track Heads?

  • If one of the tracks is soloed (headphones icon), you will not hear the other tracks.
  • The "Mute" button (speaker icon) must not be active.
  • If you want to hear yourself playing enable the "Input Monitoring" button.
  • Check the output volume sliders, and if a volume automation is set.
  • User uploaded file

Have you checked the Master Tarck settings (Track menu > Show Master Track). There is also a volume slider for the master volume.

Another thing to check are the settings in the AUdio Midi Utility. Launch this app from Applications > Utilities:

Check, if the frequency for the internal speakers is set correctly:

You can enable more buttons from the "Track" menu: "Track > Trackheader ". From there you can enabe the other options to show.

I can't get any sound to actually play back.

All sources you mentioned are third party products - your Korg keyboard, audio files. As a tets - can you get GarageBand to play sound, if you simply open a vocal track and speak or sing something?

Here's what my GarageBand looks like: https://www.dropbox.com/s/cn2mu4kwvrxq8by/Screenshot%202014-02-17%2023.25.48.png

No track has a headphone icon, no track has a mute button and the volume sliders look correct. My Audio MIDI Utility also matches your screenshot.

I couldn't find the "input monitoring" button however or locate the part of your screenshot that says "Solo" in my GarageBand.
