iphone frozen at Hello Screen - Not responsive to touch

iPhone 5 suddenly would not detect network

Restart and reboot, screen 1/3 full of error messages

Restoring to current backup yields a phone with same error messages on the black Apple Screen.

Restoring to old backup or Restore as a new phone finally brings phone to Hello Screen, but touch screen will not work to slide and activate.

Any advice to move beyond a Hello Screen that will not respond to a touchscreen swipe?
