    Hi Morris,

Perhaps Numbers 2 is trying to open a Numbers 3 document.

Installing Numbers 3 did not remove Numbers 2 from your machine. Nor did it replace the Numbers icon on your Dock. That icon continues to point to Numbers 2.

Numbers 2.3 now lives in a folder called iWork '09 within your Applications folder. It work just as it used to (with Numbers 2.3 documents).

Numbers 3.x lives in your Applications folder (not in a sub folder).

Drag the Numbers 3 app to your Dock and right click > Options > Keep in Dock. Now you have a choice as to which version you want to open.

Screen shot of my Dock showing both versions running at the same time.

Three column chart on the left is Numbers 2.3.

Four column chart on the right is Numbers 3.1

Just be sure which one is active when opening a document (Menu > File > Open). Or right click on a document in Finder > Open With. Or drag a document to the correct icon.

    Regards,

    Ian.

    Hi Morris,

Another tip. Backup your "heritage" Numbers 2 documents and work on copies. If you inadvertently open a numbers 2 document in Numbers 3.1, you will get a warning when you start to edit:

You can revert a Numbers 3 document to Numbers 2 with File > Export To > Numbers '09... but no guarantee that all Numbers 2 features will be restored.

Many features have been lost in Numbers 3. You can send feedback to Apple with Menu > Numbers > Provide Numbers Feedback.
