Q: why can't I get my icloud email on my computer?

I cannot get my icloud email on my iMac intel computer - I always get a message to go to "preferences" and see if there is a yellow something there and if so, uncheck the box and then recheck - well this does not work.  The yellow thingy goes away, but comes right back again.  Help
