Battery Charging Questions

I seem to be having a hard time putting my hands on an Apple article discussion these two topics:

1. Affect on battery life if you use the phone while charging

2. The reason you should once a month let your Iphone go through a complete drain and then recharge cycle (I have heard battery life and I have heard simply to recalibrate the usage meter.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

iPhone 5s, iOS 7.0.4

That won't harm it.

You heard correctly. All it does is calibrate it. But it's still a good idea.
