Q: How to reinstall OS Mavericks under Recovery Mode, with no possible way (No access to APP STORE) to download the version before hand (since it says "version not previously purchased under APPLE ID")? Thanks guys

OS Mavericks was given to me on a USB by a friend (downloaded with their Apple ID).  My MAC bugged and gives me the white screen with Apple Logo and loading circle.  Clicking on "OPTION" while the computer boots and choosing "Recovery" I try to reinstall Mavericks, which prevents me saying that I need to purchase the app on my Apple ID.

Trying to download Mavericks on my Apple ID from my sister's MAC prevents me from doing so, giving me my friend's APPLE ID(since he gave us both Mavericks on a USB) with the locked grey font.

I have been frustratedly trying to fix my MAC for the past few days with no success...

I even tried installing the Recovery OS, which isn't listed in my options.

Please help, with any suggestions or comments.

Thank you guys!!

Reinstall Snow Leopard 10.6.8 on your computers then get your own copies of Mavericks using your own Apple IDs (you and your sibling should each have a separate Apple ID.)

    Thanks for your quick answer.

I have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 on a disc, but my MAC is only accessible on Recovery Mode.  How to install thru the disc?

So install 10.6.8 and then download my own version of Mavericks, hopefully all these steps won't affect the data on my hard drive. Right?

    Clean Install of Snow Leopard

Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase

the drive and everything on it.

         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came

with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.

After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see

a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.

         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue

button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.

After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive

size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of

partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button

and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended

(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.

         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed

with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.

         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup

Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same

username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup

Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh

install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software

Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.

Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

So as I see, this method formats the HD... Not something I'm gonna be able to do. (Work on it, not backed up)

Is there another way to install 10.6.8 regularly, by just erasing the current OS I have on it and replacing it?

Plus, I have another downloaded version of 10.6.8 DMG burnt on disc, not the original which came with my computer.

Nope. This is a good reason for not pirating software.

You can buy yourself an external drive on which to install Snow Leopard. Then boot from the external drive, try to access the internal drive so you can copy your files to the external drive. Then you can boot from the Snow Leopard DVD to install it on the internal drive.

Oh it isn't a priated software...

But if I find my original software given with my MAC, then how would I install it without formatting the HD?

Sorry, but if you used a copy of Mavericks obtained from someone else then it is pirated. You cannot install OS X on anything but a freshly formatted drive unless you are upgrading an earlier version of OS X or reinstalling over the exact same version. But in your case neither option is available because you must start with your computer's original softare then upgrade by downloading your own copy of Mavericks. That requires erasing the drive.

You do have a point when you say it's pirated, being obtained by someone else... Hadn't thought of that.  I actually just installed it trying to save time (over 5GB to download), plus it was a free software (nothing stolen).

I must have the original software somewhere, when I find it, please advice me on how to install it on the recovery mode (unless if it will format)?

If I use my friend's Apple ID account, I can reinstall Mavericks through recovery mode without erasing anything on my HD.

Then once I update the backup on my HD, I could erase and download my own version of Mavericks.  But I had read that TM (Time Machine) doesn't back up my Settings

Kappy you are very helpful, and I thank you for the time you are spending in trying to help me fix my issue!!

Apple may be giving it away for Free, but they would not have imposed the licensing restrictions they have if they did not care about their proprietary product.

If you use Recovery mode you cannot reinstall your friend's software unless you know his/her Apple ID and password.

Indeed you are right about about the licensing situation

This is why tomorrow I will make my friend input his Apple ID pass, re-install OS Mav.  Get my Mac to finally work again, update my Back-Up HD.

Then format the whole MAC HD, install 10.6.8 (original one given with Mac) download my own legal version of OS Mavericks and everything will be alright!!

    Kappy you are the man!!

    Thanks again
