Q: Can anyone help with apachectl error messages in Terminal?

Does anyone here understand apachectl error messages?

When I use the command:

apachectl configtest

Terminal gives me:

Warning: DocumentRoot [/usr/docs/dummy-host.example.com] does not exist Warning: DocumentRoot [/usr/docs/dummy-host2.example.com] does not exist Syntax error on line 117 of /private/etc/apache2/extra/httpd-ssl.conf: SSLCertificateFile: file '/private/etc/apache2/server.crt' does not exist or is empty

I am trying to install Baikal Server: http://baikal-server.com. Thanks

What do I have to do to /etc/apache2/httpd.conf ?

Make shure that it's like the one I posted at the begining of this thread but remove the "#" from the lines near the bottom:

    # Virtual hosts

    Include /private/etc/apache2/extra/httpd-vhosts.conf

    # Secure (SSL/TLS) connections

    Include /private/etc/apache2/extra/httpd-ssl.conf

I've checked /etc/apache2/httpd.conf ? My file is identical to yours — as far as I can tell. I still can't open the Baikal web server.

Maybe I should reset the software back to what is was before I attempt to install Baikal? Is that possible?

Maybe I should abandon Baikal if there is no real support — I haven't had any repies from Jerome Schneider or Barney -15E — and try OS X Server instead if that really is easier?

Apple's charge for OS Server is not a problem for me. I opted for Baikal originally because the setup looked simpler.

Did you think I was going to magically get some message that you wanted my help?

Your generic Subject about apachectl error messages didn't pique my curiosity until I noticed your name on it, after having found your post on a thread I ad benn posting to about using Baikal.

I replied to you on that thread and you ignored me.

    To Barney-15E:

Hmm. I certainly didn't ignore your message intentionally. Which thread was that on? I started this one rather reluctantly because I doubted it would get noticed, however TopSteve has made a big effort to help. I have been covering several threads at the same time, receiving email updates.

I used your notes for Baikal, so I thought my experiences might help if you wanted to update the document.

As for magic etc. I did check whether you had an email address listed. Ideally it would help if people could leave notes attached to the main text on "Hosting your own CalDAV and CardDAV server using Baïkal Server" at https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6311, explaining where their experiences diverged from the process.

I found the process a bit frustrating becase I thought I had got through it only to find the server didn't work when I had finished. No doubt I did something wrong or my settings were different to start with. I double checked everything but obviously that is no guarantee that the fault(s) were not mine.

I think my best option for me now is to 'cut my losses', try to restore my settings to the way they were before, and try OS X Server. I'd appreciate advice on how to do this. I think there is an original set of files in private/etc/apache2/original. Should these be copied to private/etc/apache2/extra? Do I also have to physically remove dav.baikal-server from /Library/WebServer/Documents/ ? Is there anything else I have to do. I am guessing that I can't use Time Machine to do this kind of thing.

Hi there,  Sorry I did not get right back I have only just got back from work.

Right on my test laptop I did get my apache working but not Baikal.  As on my real laptop I run the OS X server and that works very well.

Yes returning you meachin to it's original state would be a good idear and no you don't have to remove dav.baika-server.  I might try again installing but not usinging virtual-hosts.  I let you know who that go's.

Now lets get on.  first thing make shore the apache server is stoped "sudo apachectl start"

Then If you have a backup on "Time Machine" older than when we started just enter "Time Machine" navagate to /etc and highlight "apache2" and restore.    But the OS X server will tack over anyway and the website/server files are stored in a diffent place any way.

Once you machine is back the way you like it.

Goto to the App Store find "OS X server" and click buy then install.

I think all the questions the installer ask are self explanitry but if you have a problem come back hear and ask befor you go on.

Thanks. I have been trying to install the simpler Baikal 'flat' package on the basis of instrcutions from Barney-15E in the the discusssion here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/24927186?ac_cid=tw123456#24927186

Unfortunately this doesn't seem to work any better than the instructions for Baikal 'regular'.

I will try to download OS X Server. I really don't want to spend much more time on this.

I am now working on installing OS X Server. Any pointers would be appreciated.

I've been using the notes at Security Spread (http://securityspread.com/2013/10/27/setting-sync-server/). The main problem seems to be moving the Contacts from 'All on my Mac' to 'All OS X Server'. This seems to have been a known anomaly last year. I wonder if there is a workaround. Thanks for any ideas.

    OK

You have the server installed yes?

You have setup the  Sync user yes?

I'll give the way that should work then I'll post the way I did it.

You added the Sync user to the Internet Accounts yes?

You selected the apps you can use with this user but NOT Contacts and Mail yes?

NOW looking at the instuctions or flowing I think it needs some clafication.

    1) Open the Internet Accounts panel and on the Sync user account un-tick the Contacts.

    2) If the Contacts app is open quit it

    3) Open the server app and goto Accounts Users on the sidebar.

    4) You should see the SyncUser to created and yourself yes?

    6) For Contacts I added user SyncCon  (for me contacts did not work using the same accout as Cal)

    7) In the server I disabled "Contacts" in "Edit Access to Services" for every user only having it enabled on "SyncCon"

This is where I do things difent from the instuctions you flowo  (sorry I did not put this elaler)

    8) Open the Contacts App and in the menu top of the screen "Contacts" - "Preferences" (NOT) "Accounts"

    9) Click on the TAB "Accounts" in "Preerences" and click "+" chose "Other" then "CardDAV" from the pull down.  Now add the info for user and server as in the instuctions.

    10) Highlight and drag all the accounts on "All on my Mac" then drag them to "All OS X Server"

After you do all this I find the most usfull menu on Contacts (if you have more than one card with the same info selected) is "Card" - "Marge and/or Link"

    I hope this all helps

    Thank you. Much appreciated.

Yes, Server and SynchUser are set up.

SynchUser is the User name for the Contacts and Calendars & Reminders Accounts in Internet Accounts. Hope that is OK?

    TopSteve wrote:

I don't understand this. Where is the selection?

1-6: I already have separate internet accounts for Contacts and Calendar. (I leant that from Security Spread.)

    TopSteve wrote:

Where is 'Edit Access to Services'?

    8-9. Done

    10. I still can't move from "All on my Mac" to "All OS X Server" however I now have XYZ.local which has all the Contacts.

"This is most likley because you are using one account for both Contacts and Cal" Also when you added the account to "Internet Accounts" you used "Add an OS X Server Accout" This is not wrong and would work if you have two accounts on the/in the server-app.   Don't use this way for the Contacts.  Don't panic if you did it can be undone and you can start again no problem.  To night I will do screen dumps of my settup a server and post them as a how to.  I'll post them at about 10pm Athens time.

"SynchUser is the User name for the Contacts and in Internet Accounts. Hope that is OK?"

Should be OK but I use a diffent user accout for Contacts "It seems to work better that way."   user accout Consync or somthing like that.

"You selected the apps you can use with this user but NOT Contacts and Mail yes?

I don't understand this. Where is the selection?"

This is what I do it's not the only way but it worked for me

    In the server app.

Goto "Accounts"-"Users" and hilight/select the user you want to use for "Calendars & Reminders Accounts" and at the bottome of that pannel you will see a coge/gear: see pic

    Server7

Click the gear and you get this menu click "Edit Access to Services...."

and the next page comes up:

    Server8-1

Make shore there is NO tick by "Contatcts" and click OK

Now go back to "Accounts"-"Users" and if you have not all ready add an user account for Contacts e.g "Contsync" or "SyncCon" once that account has been added slecet it and as abouve goto "Edit Access to Services......" and this time ONLY have a tick by "Calendar" and none others.

    Now:

Unfortunately I can't see any pictures. Anyway, can we move this to the new discussion

How to use OS X Server (Mavericks) to synch Contacts and Calendar between a Mac and an iPhone/iPad

By the way, screen shots would be a great help!
