If I close my screen will time machine continue to back up?

I am backing up my whole macbook through time machine on my external hard-drive. Does time machine still back up if I close my screen?

MacBook Pro (13-inch Early 2011), iOS 7.0.4

When the lid is closed the MB is asleep. It will do nothing. So no back up.

Thank you. If i stop the back up and then turn my macbook pro off. When I start the back up later, will it start from the beginning or just continue from where i stopped it?

You can pause the Time Machine back up, and resume it later. It will continue from where it was paused.
