Hello,
it appears that the current version of Mail (Mavericks) always expands groups of recipients, even if the "When sending to a group, show all member addresses" checkbox is UNchecked in the Preferences. This option worked fine in my previous version of Mail (Snow Leopard).

that's not what I asked, is it? of course I knew about that, but it's a different thing
I know it's not what you asked for. But with the current state of Mail if you want to hide the other recipient's email addresses you'll need to do it via the Bcc field.
