On my iMac ( OS 10.6.8 ) I've recently discovered a file called default.rdp in a folder called RDC Connections. I'd be grateful if anyone can explain please what it is and why it might be there. All I know is that RDC stands for remote desktop connection, which sounds a bit worrying.

That is the Microsoft RDC default file, it is the blank page on which you can configure a connection to a remote computer (Windows computer)
It does nothing unless you configure it and it has no role to play in connections to your computer. Ignore it or delete it (unless you use Microsoft Remote Desktop)
Thank you for enlightening me. I guess it found its way here in an Office for Mac update or some such - I can't think of any other Microsoft stuff on here. Glad to learn it's nothing dodgy.

Yes, RDC is a part of Office 2011, just delete it.
