hi,
I try opening a not-so-old document and I get “This document can’t be opened because it is too old. To open it, save it in Pages ’09 first”.
But when I go to Launch Pad and try to open Pages’09, I get “Could not launch “/Applications/iWork ’09/Pages.app”.
I use Pages 5.1 (1769).
How do I "save it" if I can't open it?
Is there a way out of this?

You have tried to open a Pages '08 document with Pages 5, it can't.
Pages '08 should still be in your Applications/iWork folder.
It can export to Word .doc which Pages 5 can open.
However be warned Pages 5.1 has had almost 100 features removed by Apple and is full of bugs. Look before you leap.

But that's like being stabbed in the back.
Does Apple offer suggestions as to how their clients can salvage all their prior work?
Their reply is to use Pages '09 to open and resave their work, but then no longer offers Pages '09 for sale.
Apple auto-updated users' to Pages 5 last October, which then promptly trashed a lot of their work from previous versions.
It hardly got a mention, nowhere that any normal user would find, when finally a month later they stopped Pages 5 simply overwriting older files.
Apple has shown both a level of incompetence and lack of consideration that is breathtaking, if it wasn't so widespread in Mavericks and a warning of more to come. Apple does not care about your work. Any conversations I have had with Apple staff it is clear they don't even think about it.
Heed the warning or suffer the consequences. Apple is not for turning.

- is the file stored on the local hard drive or on a network server
Suggest opening the file with Pages 4.3 and saving it, then opening it with Pages 5

Do you have Pages '09, or Pages '08?

This is how it works:
You have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.
Pages 5 is in your Applications folder.
Pages '09/'08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.
You are alternately opening the wrong versions.
Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5.01 can not open Pages 5.1 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5.1 files can not be opened in Pages 5.
Anything that is saved to iCloud is also converted to Pages 5 files.
All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.
Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.
Apple has removed almost 100 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs:
Archive/trash Pages 5, after exporting all Pages 5 files to Pages '09 or Word .docx, and rate/review it in the App Store, then get back to work.

I do have iWiork 8, and 9. And I have an appointment later this week at Apple with a Pages specialist. He/she must have already heard of the problem.

I completely misread your issue. Sorry. You are saying that you have Pages '09, however it will not launch from Launch Pad.
That is odd, because I also have Pages '09 and the new Pages 5.1, but Launch Pad only shows me the new one. I don't see the old one. I got my Pages '09 from disk though. Maybe yours came from the appstore so it could be different?
Have you tried going directly to the Pages '09 app in Applications/iWork '09/ and launching it from there?

In the end, click Open with... and select the earlier Pages version from the drop down menu, and the document will open.
Eventually, that won't be needed any longer.
