How to connect a wireless N camera (like d-link) to iPad Air without a router?

How does one connect wireless N network cameras directly to an iPad Air? Without using a router, as every camera I've found suggests. For real-time viewing.

I use my iPad Air for GPS navigation in my Jeep (using Bad Elf), and I also want to view network cameras mounted underneath my Jeep while going over large rocks. Adding a wireless router inside the Jeep seems like a waste and adds clutter to an already chaotic storage situation (camping gear, tools, ...).

What apps might one use? Apps I've looked at, like Air Cam, all seem to require a network and router, but I hope that is not necessarily the case.

An example camera is the D-Link DCS-930L. (yes, I will have to protect the camera from water and rocks)
