Why do I get a hanging black screen when I start Time Machine?

Hi there,

So I went to start the Time Machine backup application and I get thrown into a black screen that doesnt change.. I then have to exit out of it by holding the esc key.

Im on a mac mini 2.9 ghz intel core i5

8GB ram

Any thoughts?

Ps. The hardrive that it is using works fine and time machine HAS been making backups to the HD. I just cant use the application to get to them!
