Replacement iPhone 4s defective

I got a replacement for my iphone 4s and it defected after 10 days. By the time my carrier got the replacement the original warranty expired and they refuse to service/replace it. Why can't I contact apple support to get assistance with that when the replacement clearly has 90 days warranty? I am not ok with paying $19 just to be able to talk to apple support. Could you please advise.

Hi Carl, thanks for the quick response. Unfortunately, apple say that it has to go through the carrier, as they hold the warranty of the original product and then the carrier refuses to get my iphone for replacement. A bit of a pickle I found myself in. Is there any way to get clearance to bring the phone directly to apple without having to go through the carrier?
