I have an Airport Extreme Router upstairs in our small townhouse. When using my iphone, ipad, apple TV and Mac downstairs the signal is very weak. I have positioned the router at the top of the stairs so there is no walls between the router and downstairs but still have the problem. What do you suggest? Do DLink Wireless Extenders work with the Airport Extreme Router? If not what do you suggest?

No, most likely they will not. I would recommend using another AirPort base station. The least expensive route would be to use an AirPort Express, and then, configure both base station for an extended network.
