Emails bypassing the Apple Mail inbox for gmail account

I have a gmail account and I use Apple Mail to view the contents of the account. Recently I archived a lot of items from the inbox and have now found that all new emails will show in my gmail inbox when opened from a web browser (as expected), but do not show in my Apple Mail inbox.

These emails are received by Apple Mail but are only in the All Mail folder.

How do I correct this behaviour?
