    Hello Torinta,

Try to put your iPod Nano into Disk mode and then Restore it using iTunes.

Hi, I went to that link and putting it in disk mode seemed to work this time - the nano screen comes up with a message 'do not disconnect'. But when I go to restore it after connecting it to itunes, the same problem occurs. It asks for a name and password which is not the same as the Apple ID and pw. what pw exactly is it asking for? I want to pass on my ipod nano to my niece but need to wipe off my music so she can put hers on. This isn't possible unless I get it restored. Please advise?

    iPod nano (6th generation)

    1. Before placing the iPod into Disk Mode, verify that it has a charge.
    2. Reset the device by pressing the Sleep and Volume Down buttons simultaneously until the display shows the Apple logo. This should take about eight seconds.
    3. When the Apple logo appears, hold down the Volume Down and Volume Up buttons simultaneously until the device enters Disk Mode.

Do not reset your iPod if…

If your iPod is connected to a computer and displays any of the  following messages, you should eject the iPod from  within iTunes instead of resetting it:

    • Connected. Eject before disconnecting
    • Sync in Progress. Please wait…
    • Do not disconnect

Tip:  Check out  this helpful movie, too. ( http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1320?viewlocale=en_US )

    Try the below steps :

If you can see your iPod in windows explorer on your My Computer the Right click on your iPod and Format it in Fat32 Format once it is formatted completely remove it from your computer and then reconnect it and open iTunes on your computer and Restore it using iTunes and if your iPod is not appearing in iTunes then Put your iPod in disk mode by referring the Above steps and then try to Restore your iPod to Factory settings.

Thank you!  This worked perfectly for me to restore it and add my music.
