Launch iPhoto while holding down the option key to view other options.

Feb 19, 2014 5:22 AM in response to nicola162by Barry Hemphill,Your photos are located in your home folder>pictures. Open that and click on your library. If you have a time machine backup, restore them from there.
If they are not there, I would restore your system from a backup (made, hopefully, before the update).

Feb 19, 2014 5:31 AM in response to nicola162by christopherfromstanmore,Hi Nicola
Firstly -Mavericks is very good and seems to work fine even on old Macs.
Also it is good practice to run 'time machine' or in some way back up all your files before doing anything major like change the operating system. I realise this may be annoying info if it's too late for that.
Is there an item in your pictures folder called iPhoto Library.photolibrary?
If so right click and 'show package contents' to see all the photos.
If this is not it - had you kept your library on a different drive or location to the default one?
If so you can just locate it in the finder and double click to open it in iPhoto
Hope this helps

Feb 19, 2014 6:36 AM in response to christopherfromstanmoreby nicola162,Hi Chris
Thank you for your response and to you all. I think unfortunately I have lost them. I have clicked on the photo library but it just tells me I can't open it using the new version. All photos appear to have gone. If I restored snow leopard could I retrieve them then? I cannot believe they have just gone! Heartbroken.
How do I try to retrieve from icloud?

Feb 19, 2014 6:44 AM in response to nicola162by QuickTimeKirk,Mavericks doesn't include any version of iPhoto as it's a separate download. So installing Mavericks couldn't have "lost" your photos.
You photos are not backed up in iCloud. You would have known if you did an iCloud backup and would have had to purchase additional storage.
What version of iPhoto is on your machine? Use the Finder Get Info window to find out.
How large in file size is your existing iPhoto Library? Use the same steps to answer.

Feb 19, 2014 7:12 AM in response to nicola162by QuickTimeKirk,Maybe the error message is saying that your older version of iPhoto can't run on Mavericks. If that's the case you should be able to download the 9.5.1 version at no charge:

Feb 19, 2014 7:26 AM in response to nicola162by Tony T1,9.5.2 is the Latest.
Try ->Software Update
or d/l from https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/iphoto/id408981381?mt=12
(You should not have to purchase)
Then if you're still having trouble, while holding the option and command keys, click the iPhoto icon in the Dock and select [Repair Database]
