turning on shows logo, turning circle, then quits; can I recover?

Stratup goes as far as chime, display of logo, and spinning wheel, but grey screen does not advance over next minute and a half, at which point computer turns off. Cap light works, sleep light works but does not vary in intensity. Is this a fatal crash or is there a way to recover?

26Sam,

you’ll need to use the grey Mac OS X Install DVD which originally came in the box with your MacBook Pro to fix this. Boot from this DVD, and then select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu in the menu bar. On the left-hand side of the Disk Utility window, select your internal disk’s boot partition (typically called “Macintosh HD”). On the right-hand side, press the Verify Disk button if it’s not greyed out; if it is greyed out, or if it reports that errors were found, press the Repair Disk button. Once the verification/repair is completed, exit Disk Utility and select Restart from the Apple menu to restart in normal mode. Does it now reach the login screen?

Melophage,

I found my grey Mac OS x Install DVD - in fact, disck 1 & 2. It's true, I have been running OS X 10.5.7, but disk 1 is labelled Mac OS verion 10.4.10. I have not used the disk, being concerned that if I use this to boot from disk, I may play havoc with my OS and possiby lose data that has been saved in the later version of OS. (I also find I have a Mac OS x Leopard CPU Drop-in DVD,version 10.5, if that is of any help.)

Melophage,

Sorry not to have replied earlier. I inserted the disc and it would not boot, nor would it eject the disc. I took it to the Genius Bar at the nearest Apple Store. They could not get it running, and because it was out of warranty, I was referred to a recommended local service store. There my computer was diagnosed with about ten bad sectors on the hard disk. They replaced the hard disk and appear to have recovered all the data.

Thanks very much for your help, even though the computer wouldn't cooperate.
